@opnsource A touchdown is worth more points (6) however a Field Goal (free kick) is almost a guaranteed 3 points. If a team is unable to score a touchdown on the first 3 downs, they usually go for a kick if they are close enough, rather than risking no points if they fail the touchdown. Its much easier to kick a field goal than score a touchdown, which is why its only worth 3 points. Coaches usually try to put as many points on the board as possible so we see field goals kicked very often.
