Wow thats really intresting because not many people nowadays would be able to tell what it was like to wear one of these, most of the WW1 gas masks that remain have their rubber coating on the inside of the mask which has rotted away and has become very brittle, explaining the black "bits" of rubber all over the paper. I would imagine it would be uncomfortable to wear due to the mouth piece and the nose clip especially for long periods of time.
Sixty-five years ago a schoolmate let me try on his WWI gas mask. The drill was to pull it on and quickly insert the mouthpiece and breathe through it while the nose clip could be adjusted from the outside. Breathing resistance was moderate, and of course there was no rebreathed air and the eyepieces offered a dismal view out. I remember an interesting experience, but fighting a war while masked up for any time at all must have been extremely difficult.
Actually compaired to most found this is in great condition compaired to some. Retrorespirators is darker, has no straps and no of the rubber lift inside. But, his does have something that mine does not, he has the nose clip.
Guess its how Bart kept it you can actually see the rubber around the eyepieces is all there for the most part, but the mouth piece is dry, and the rubber has mostly fallen off and the nose clip is missing.
