This award-winning film features nine unique schools, both public and private, California to East Harlem. In these unique schools relationship, creative thinking, and direct experience are valued above memorization of facts. As we struggle with issues of how to provide a quality education for all children, we might look to these successful schools where teachers, students, parents and administrators are involved in creating supportive educational environments.

  • Been going to school for about 14 years. I really need a job. plz help me find one..

  • They go to these great schools...and then go on to go to mind numbing "you must memorise" type of high schools. That's not a solution.

  • i am sad that i rarely experienced teachers behaving and communicating in ways that encourage self discovery and self initiated learning, and simply listening to my needs, instead of the curriculum's.

  • good 2 learn

  • No, rote learning is merely holding information. It doesn't teach children how to get it for themselves, how to appreciate it, and how to build on it.

Rote learning is giving the child a piece of bread and butter. Sure, it fills them up. It gives them what they need, fundamentally.

Active Participation is teaching the children how to grow the grain, make the bread and sell it at a profit.

  • Thank you very much for posting !!

  • They, my friend, are like Vulcans of Star Trek fames and like humans of more over-all goodness.

  • The response by CommonsenseBrigade is full on propaganda. Why should we use words like hands-on and progressive with quotation marks? What's the matter,CommonSenseSquad can't speak 4 lanuages?I know I can: Estonian,English,Russian and German, and I'm starting to learn Latin in depth too.Nice Bach music on the background.Education was fracked up at some point.By the way progressive and hands-on schools go through the national curriculums and are good at nailing national exams around the world.

  • i love school!

  • HARLEM in the Building.
