Brook Benton's "Boll Weevil Song" was the #2 song in the nation in June of 1961 almost exactly 50 years ago from the date of this post (only Ricky Nelson's "Travelin' Man" kept it from #1). The song is actually an adaptation of "Boll Weevil Blues" as performed by Lead Belly back in the Depression Era of the early 1930's.
