My name is Virginia. My sister died from breast cancer, and my mother has also battled breast cancer.
It had been 20 years since my last mammogram. In February, I received a mammogram thanks to the YWCA Women's Health.
I knew I needed to get screened, but I was uninsured and could never get through the hospital system on my own. Thankfully a friend referred me to the YWCA.
As much as I tried to ignore it, I had been having breast pains for quite a while by the time I called the YWCA for a free mammogram. There was a spot on the mammogram that they were concerned about, so the YWCA paid for me to receive diagnostic tests to determine if it might be cancer.
I wasn't diagnosed with cancer, but they wanted to see me back in six-months rather than letting the abnormality go an entire year unchecked. The YWCA covered the costs of both the initial diagnostics and the six-month follow-up.
Everything has come back clear so far, and I'm so thankful to have had the YWCA as a resource to protect my health. Without the YWCA, I wouldn't have been able to receive these screenings.
