There are historical precedents involving same-sex marriages in other cultures. Marriages among Roman men were not uncommon for centuries, until outlawed by the Theodosian Code in 342 AD. There were close and committed homosexual relationships that were considered marriage, or an equivalent, throughout Europe, Asia and Africa for many centuries both before Christianity, or even the Judaism. Native American societies have had same-sex marriages noted historically, as well as male-female unions.

No, he's just pissed off like a great many of us are. On facebook there is a group titled "Against Gay Marriage? Then don't get one and Shut The Fuck Up!" which is how a great many people feel right about now. Vulgar? He is a sex columnist, he can be explicit and to the point which is actually very refreshing.

Women's rights is *not* a red herring, it's a fact that we used to be traded as property in marriage, and that is different now. It's highly illogical to keep two consenting adults from entering into a legal contract of commitment, especially when it would not effect you.

When the religious right makes adultery a capital offense and divorce illegal, then I'll listen to them when they claim that they're "protecting marriage" from gay people.

Someone needs to protect marriage from the Religious Right!!!
