Ceramic/metallic cyl. liners would be wear resistant ( 350 000 psi. + ) under extreme conditions. Why hone or bore at all? Of course, if someone is selling $100 000.00 machines, we have no choice. A car/truck is like a dead carcass, The big predators come, then the vultures, then the cadaver bugs finish 'er off. Real science eradicates the garbage trades.
@cbeck611 over time pistons smooth the cylinders, with a perfectly smooth wall, it is difficult for the wall to retain lubricant. honing sratches the wall basically, similar to sand paper. it will usually get rid of minor imperfections too. very simple process, only minescule amounts of metal are removed. you can usually re use the stock pistons too, but rings would most likely need replacing if honing is needed. unlike boring. many people confuse the two.
you should really use a torque plate next time. Overall better quality for the customer at a slight additional expense. They might not feel its needed but your the machinist not him..you could convince him to fondle your balls for just a little bit more money and he would be satisfied more in the long run. Win-Win :P
its actually measured by load on the hone. when you have less load it is getting closessize of the hone. its not like each time it takeing an exact amount off, it lessesnt with each pass, and it being rubbed off instead of cut, its more precise. and the bore is constantly measured through out the process
@cbeck611 honing a block refers to making the cylinders and bearing surfaces perfect circles and in perfect line to where they should be. It helps in the fluidity of movement of the crank shaft and camshaft to help reduce friction and unneeded wear on parts.

How do you ensure the mid stroke isn't getting cut twice as often, as the end positions?
