Model airplanes with the propeller powered by tightly wound strips of rubber are nowadays a minor hobby whereas in the period from the 1920's to the '50's it was a popular pastime.
Unlike the modern R.C.,(Radio Control) models, usually equipped with small battery powered electric motors, these rubber powered 'planes are 'free flight' and once launched they may circle, climbing steadily for a minute or so until the rubber motor "runs down" and the plane glides serenely down to earth. All too frequently, the plane crashes to earth or equally grievous flies too well and disappears into the distance, borne aloft by fickle breezes, leaving the builder to contemplate the many, many hours spent creating his model.

RC Groups started a free flight sub-forum! Under the "exotic aircraft" section. Nothing teaches aerodynamics like FF ships. Any RC pilot, or any model builder for that matter, can benefit from rubber-powered experience.

Nice to see people still enjoying rubber power... have fun. You deserve to, after winning the freedom and building the economy that my generation is currently destroying.
