hes not a coward, he was a very, very good fighter. but its true he never wanted to test himself against the best fighters of his era.

if you want to fight the man you dont wait for him to come to you though. being the SMW champ but being unknown on the world stage means that you can pick and choose your fights without risking your '0'.

thats what calzaghe did.

there's no such thing in boxing, despite the bullshit with federations, belts and records, as any fighter who was known and marketable on the world stage who never got a defining fight against world class opponents.

I know he was a high risk low reward fighter, I said that. And it wasn't that Calzaghe shouldn't fight them for what they get out of it, that was why they wouldn't fight him.

fighters are judged by who they fought and when they fought them.

joe deserves props for taking on kessler and lacy but in the end they both proved to be below world class.

the thing that 'eats' people in this argument is that joe was a bloody good fighter who sold his career short because how many 'true weight champs' do you kniow who never fought a proven world class fighter in their prime.

that's the bottom line.

calzaghe shouldnt have fought jones or hopkins because there was something in it for his opponents - nobody does that.

you're right, joe is the best super middle.

but he's the best super middle and nothing more who never tested himself against the best because, as you say, he was "little known".

calzaghe was never 'unknown', he was always a high risk low reward fighter who never took that tag away from him and so never got his big fights. hatton did by changing that mentality

Why do you think Calzaghe didn't fight them? It is because there was nothing in it for Hopkins or Jones in their prime. Think about it, if a then little known in America Calzaghe took on prime Jones of Hopkins and was beaten then Jones or Hopkins would be critisized for fighting an unknown fighter but if they lost then their career would be in tatters so why would they take the fight?
