Have you listened to it? The Brendel/Abbado recording that is?
And who are you saying is the worst ever conductor, Abbado or Ozawa? Whoever it is, I am almost certain most serious (and honest) listeners will disagree.
Of course, superb recording. I love it. But, I think I love the Brendel/Abbado recording even more. Especially Abbado. He owns this work. I bet he conducts this too entirely from memory, as he does just about any other music he chooses to conduct. (Does he EVER conduct with the score?? Same for Ozawa.) Not to say Brendel is lacking, because he is not. I don't think his playing is inferior to Backhaus's. I can imagine some people being put off by his mannerisms and tone production though.
Absolutely delightful and musical, Backhaus never fails to reward me; he is one of the greatest musicians to ever play the piano, and has a perfect partnership with Maestro Bohm, the glorious Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and the fabulous Decca/London sound engineers.
