  • I don't understand at all how anyone can not be moved and amazed by Mark Doty's poetic conjunction of the banal and the profound, with healing humor added. It's an incredible accomplishment and one he has beautifully honed over the last decade or so during which time I have admired him (almost) unreservedly.

  • Flames, beautiful flames, so fierce and fleeting. The House of Beauty finally lives up to its name.

  • @angryseraph I'm a bit tardy with this response, but it couldn't be helped:

An acquiescence to your statement could only be given in half. Yes, there are

"SO MANY (better) poets out there," and a few that you mentioned (Sexton, Plath

and Stevens) rank as personal favorites, but where Doty fails in vocal pre-

sentation he succeeds in reaching, viscerally, into that private, fiduciary part

of a mind that needs to spurt a confession. Shame on me for thinking he was

    abstruse like Pinsky.

  • Can't help but notice that he recites poetry like the Joker in the dark knight.

  • a fantastic voice for poetry but a little melodramatic

  • wow, i've heard mark doty recite this poem last year at one of my college's english poet series and he recited it completely different... i still just love this poem though

  • I was distracted by it too. He is not one of my favorites either.

  • The breathy way he reads is distracting. A good poet but not someone I'm particularly excited about, but some of my friends worship him.

But it's a good sign there are so many poets to choose from!

  • yes yes and yes. Also add Adrienne Rich and Louise Gluck.

  • I remember hearing him read this there for the first time. The energy in the room was electric. To hear this poem during such a dark time in the Iraq war was incredibly moving.
