! Battle of Britains fart occasionally, but Cromptons fart continously every minute. Beeching called it 'progress'. The harder they heave, the louder they fart, or at least, that is how I imagine it. With steam there is the added problem of 'priming'. This is the driver's nightmare: the unexepected 'follow through' :-( which cakes the boiler with embarrassing stains that are difficult to wash-off. The 'eggy' smell created by a 'hot big end' warning bulb melting an LNER indignity, however.
