He had large hands and fat fingers which he used to great effect on his 12 string. Played a lot of Leadbelly

Fred Gerlach was a incredible guitarist and this has to be the best rendition of Gallows Pole around. Fred described it as being so strenuous that he needed to play regularly for a week before he even attempted to play it.
Brilliant

I remember when I discovered this years ago and how much I loved Gerlach's distinctive 12-string style. A very dynamic version of the classic. Thanks for posting!

R.I.P Fred Gerlach (Jan. 2010): this is a great reissue on Folkways from a 12 string Master: I read somewhere that Jimmy Page was inspired by this version. If you're interested in Fred's music listen to: "Songs My Mother Never Sang" on Takoma, a rare vinyl but a stunning one!
Saw Fred Gurlach in London around that time in a club called "Ballads and Blues", Long John Baldry used to play there mostly Broonzy stuff.

Amazing, what was the show like? Can you remember what kind of songs he played? I would love to know more about the man.
