Doom 64 was the Nintendo 64's incarnation of the popular Doom franchise. The gameplay, weapons and monsters remained fairly the same as in the DOS versions; however, the atmosphere was entirely different. Doom which consisted of fast adrenaline metal tracks Doom 64 took an entirely different approach with its ambient soundtrack. Most of the levels in the game, especially the levels that took place in hell, were very dark in presence with darkly lit areas, mutilated corpses of former humans scattered about together with a unnervingly hellish red sky with lightning going on all around the player.
Unfortunately, and undeserving in my opinion, Doom 64 was poorly met by critics and fans of the past games due to these changes.

Doom 64 is a scary and very disturbing game, much more so than Doom 3 ever was. That's why I think it deserves much more credit than it received. Hopefully there are people out there that share the same opinion as I do; make a comment and share your thoughts yourself.

Spoiler galore ahead obviously. This video showcases the final level in the game, "The Absolution", in which the player faces off against the Mother Demon; the demon responsible of raising the dead corpses of the demons that the player fought against in Doom.
I'm using the fully upgraded Unmaker, exclusive to Doom 64 by the way, against the Mother Demon; that's why she was slain so quickly.
I recorded this footage with FRAPS while the game was emulated by the Project64 emulator.

  • Awesome. I really got to get this port off eBay. Looks really impressive. I couldn't believe how awful Doom for the Saturn was, but this port looks promising.

  • It's the best port in my opinion, though I know a lot people will differ and say that the PSX port is better. Still, they're fairly the same although the latter looks almost the same as the DOS version, i.e. same textures, monster designs, weapons etc.

  • I'm just amazed you got Doom64 working on a emulator. All the other times I've tried, the ROM's simply don't agree with any emulator I put it through. Oh, yes;

    Holyshitmonsters.

  • Really strange. Have you tried the Project64 emulator (full support for the EU, JPN and US versions)? Perhaps the ROM is corrupted?

Your computer does indeed seem to have some grudge against older games. :(

  • Brother! You have great taste! I STILL TO THIS DAY haven't played Doom 64. I even bought it used shortly after its release. Sadly, the game was broken, and would not play. I was bummed!

I have been going on a bit of a Doom collecting binge for a while now. My Fiancee got me a copy of Doom for the SNES, and I picked up Doom for the Sega Genesis just the other day. I don't have a Genesis lol. I know a local store that has Doom 64, Doom for PS1, and Doom for the old panasonic 3D0!

  • Your girl is awesome, tell her that. I don't know many people who would go out and buy a 15 year old game for an ancient console.

Sucks that you haven't been able to play this game though, it's really something.

  • Doom 3 was accepted well by players and critics alike.

To me this is a lot scarier Doom, the darkest and best Doom game of them all, and I`m modding it on PC!

Doom 3 was scary, but not near this one. This one had the ambiance!

    Midway did a great job!

  • Totally agree, I used to play Doom on my 64 when I was really young, some levels were really fucking disturbing, and hards has hell. was a big challenge back then and is a big challenge now, when we see doom 3 we realize that the overall dificiculty in games has been going down since those times. Great game

totalmente de acuerdo, solia jugar doom en mi nintendo 64 cuando era un crio, algunos niveles son realmente perturbadores y dificiles. fue un gran reto entonces y lo sigue siendo

  • this is the best doom ever made! (n my favorite FPS game)

why? the excesive usage of satanic imagery (inverted crosses, pentagrams, etc), with the dark desing of the levels, sounds from psx doom, hi-res sprites for monsters (that looks like 3d monsters but still with the great sprite desing) and the disturbing soundtrack (i love the endgame ost, reminds psx theme but is more dramatic and less march-like i think) makes a great horror sci-fi game ever made! (demonic sci-fi, not the stupid aliens)

  • when doom 4 comes out, i hope the final boss is a revamp of the mother demon.

  • Anyone who doesn't like Doom 64 is a loser.

  • @PencilPusher93: Yeah, a few of my friends say it's not great, but I'm still gettin it :D.

  • I think my computer just has a grudge against anything involving fun or joy. D:
