Canada apologizes for residential school system

June 11, 2008 - Prime Minister Harper offered Canada's aboriginal peoples an official apology for the government's involvement in the Indian residential school system and its ongoing policy of forced assimilation.

Opposition leaders also offered their apologies during a special sitting of the House of Commons.

Aboriginal leaders were welcomed onto the House floor to respond to the apology.

It is true. The church has never made an apology. I am a Native Greenlander, and in the 1950s, children were taken and sent to denmark, because Greenland was a colony of Denmark, and they wanted to do the same to those children, assimilate them. Many ended up drunk, unhappy and without a job or money to get back home. Denmark has never yet made any apologies..

stephan- how would you like if your children were sexually, physically, emotionally, and spiritually abused! you would send the abuser to jail! no damn apology is going to fix what has happened to our culture! so take your apology and shove it up your ass! Maybe your children need to go through the same things that happened in residential school! see how it affects them!

It's easy for him to apologize on behalf of a government he had no part of. He would gain more respect if he would apologize for current atrocities that his government has created or refuses to rectify.

He needs to make another apology to First Nations people for ignoring all of our Idle No More protests and just recently, he ignored the Nishiyuu walkers who walked from northern Quebec to Ottawa to meet up with him, Harper instead of meeting up with the walkers (which he had plenty of time to make arrangements, took the walkers 4 days to reach to Ottawa), he took photos with pandas in Toronto. I hope this proves to show to the rest of Canada that he can't reliable when his people need him.
