Arterial Blood Gases are only analyzed when someone is very very sick. It often requires a blood specimen from an artery (radial) in your wrist (ouch). Other diagnostic tests ordered by practitioners are done by chest X - Rays, CAT Scans, MRIs, biopsy for cancer or blood tests for infection.

Hi. There is a bit more to acid base balance, anion gaps, base deficit, intrapulmonary shunting to name a few others. This is an "Intro" to ABG interpretation, really meant for a nurse or beginner practitioner. It took me a long time to learn acid base balance, so it is always good to start with the basics. Thanks for the question.
