This silent 8mm film, made by German doctor Horst Bickel, documents his discovery of the effects of phenylalanine on a patient with phenylketonuria (PKU), and features the first ever dietary treatment for PKU. Filmed at The Children's Hospital, Birmingham, England, 1954-1955. Introduced by Dr. Harvey Levy, Senior Associate in Medicine at Childrens Hospital Boston.

YOu can actually see my daughter's progression in my youtube videos. She is now five years old. SHe was born in mexico, where PKU screening is not standardized.

this is as i expected...i was late diagnosed and am 51 years old. Before i was diagnosed with pku i didnt walk or talk . once i was put on diet i improved greatly. i was diagnosed at 2 years of age

For me, this is a heart-wrenching video, as I have PKU as well. Is there any word on how this girl grew up and how she is doing now? My guess is that she would be in her mid-50s at this time.
