Sjostrom was just as important as Griffith in the development of the early cinema and it's a shame that the romantic Griffith, although great, gets almost all the recognition. Sjostrom owes more to the careers of Erich von Stroheim and Josef von Sternberg, and by extension, Jean Renoir and Bernardo Bertolucci, than Griffith's would. And while I doubt Sjostrom directly influenced them, he certainly prefigured the metaphysical work of Andrei Tarkoskvy and Terrence Malick.

Like A Man There Was before it and The Wind ten years later, Sjostrom continues to chronicle man's inability to conquer nature.
