my system is to old 1985.

I have an older Yamaha RX-V890 receiver and a new Samsung TV. How can I get surround sound? I'm told I have to connect my cable box to the receiver, which I did, but I only get sound out of the left , center and right speakers, not the rear, and no surround sound. Help!
