  • @puppyhakase I spoke too soon, seeing now that the PIC itself acts as a multiplexing (MUXing) unit. Meaning that all of the wavelengths are combined into a single wavelength during transport, and broken out at each point... That relieves the problem of bleed and interference, but the capacity problem still remains.

  • Also, I don't mean to belittle Infinera's attempts at advancing current optical technology, only to point out that there must be a significant effort on the part of other manufacturing companies as well as carriers to catch up to where Infinera is striving to be.

  • Current high-capacity shelves have capacity for only one of these PICs before they run out of backplane bandwidth. That means that a node which originally housed ten links facing different nodes can only face one other node, creating a point-to-point rather than a real network.

Another problem: fiber between sites isn't always "dark," meaning that there are already existing wavelengths of light traversing it. Depending on the wavelengths Infinera utilizes, it could mean bleeding signals...

  • Iv'e been following the Infinera story , since its first prototype PIC was tested.

this is growth on an order of magnitude, Infinera really is accomplishing much, they will single -handedly change the entire Infrastructure.
