CHICKEN COOP BUILDING ESSENTIALS

Chicken coops come in many forms and sizes. There are several brands of chicken coop kits and design blueprints are so varied that choosing one to fit your needs can be a challenge. Whether you are planning to build a chicken coop as a backyard hobby or as a full scale poultry business, there are essential factors you must consider if you want it to be enjoyable and profitable. Whatever design you or make you eventually choose- it would be wise to make a check for the following design essentials:

1-VENTILATION-Your structure must have proper ventilation. You must pay due attention to the climate and conditions that will affect your chicken. If you are in warm , dry areas -- keep them cool and the air hydrated. If you are in cold climate- have ample lighting to generate much needed heat to keep them warm. Do make sure there is sufficient airflow and that ventilation is good in all areas. This can help to battle the intense heat at noontime as it allows air to move in and out instead of trapping hot air in. A good design will provision for weather extremes.

2-SAFETY AND SECURITY-Your poultry has its share of predators. Foxes, owls, rats , raccoons all prey on chicken and so there are dangers whether you are in an urban or rural area. It is wise to invest in only quality standard material that is sturdy and secure. When building, remember that investing in good material is always worth it as low quality wears easily and replacement and fix it jobs can be very costly not to mention time-consuming. Do not compromise on safety as predators will device ways and means to get to their prey and this barrier is your poultry's only defense. Moreover, once they have experiences a successful attack they will most certainly come back for more and will be twice as bold.

3- SANITATION. Keeping the coop clean and dry is a necessary daily occupation but it need not be tedious. A good design will make cleaning swift and easy. Proper drainage is the main deterrent against disease and bacteria that can spread from droppings and stale water so make sure your floors are tilted for easy hassle free washing down of debris and prevention of water or urine accumulating in any part of the coop. Keep in mind that droppings can harbor deadly diseases that can contaminate your chicken count very rapidly. For this reason it is imperative that sanitation be on top of your priority list.

Whatever your design, whether old fashioned, conventional or modern, fixed or portable, these 3 essentials are the fundamental factors to take into account when building a proper chicken coop.
