Leaving The Hospital With Your Newborn

It is the day where you, your partner and your newborn baby get to leave the hospital together as a family for the first time. You should ideally be prepared for this day beforehand so you are all organised for this big day. You should at least have your leaving clothes and your rear facing baby car seat ready. Make sure the baby car seat you have bought is baby car seats 0 months +. You should have ideally practiced getting the seat in and out of the car. You should know exactly how to fit it so that it is safe and secure. Most hospitals wont let you leave unless they have seen your baby secure in its car seat. Always make sure you have bought the correct size of car seat for your newborn.

Be sure to dress your baby in the appropriate clothing on leaving the hospital. Babies feel the cold a lot more than adults do so make sure they are wrapped up in warm clothes, a hat, and mittens and with a thick blanket over them. In the warmer weather you should dress your baby in something cosy but not too warm. For example, a baby sleep suit covered by a thin blanket and a hat should keep your baby cosy.

You will most likely be feeling really tired, sore and weak. Make sure to arrange for someone to come and collect you and your child as a new mum should never drive home with her baby. Get someone else to carry your baby out to the car as you will still be sore. Make sure to pack your dressing gown as the clothes you have brought with you may not fit. Also bring some shoes that are easy to put on for example slippers or flip flops.

You are best to make sure the car seat has the right level of padding to help support your babys head as newborns cant support their own heads. If your baby is too small for the seat you could roll up a towel and place it to one side of the seat (down one of your babys sides between your baby and the seat) to keep them more secure. Dont put anything around your babys head in case of suffocation.

If you dont have products such as nappies, milk, bottles etc ask you friends to go and get some supplies from a shop.

Dont take your child out of his rear facing baby car seat while the car is moving. Your baby will most likely be sleepy when you leave the hospital.
