The Immortal Bard's tale about the murderously scheming king is told in a singular way by star/screenwriter Ian McKellen and director/screenwriter Richard Loncraine.
The XV Century play now takes place in an alternative fascist English setting, wherein the deformed, ambitious and machiavelic Richard, Duke of Gloucester, will do anything to lay his hands on the crown, even if it means the murder of his brothers, nephews, wife and co-conspirators.
Richard III (1995) was nominated for the Academy Awards of Best Art Direction-Set Decoration and Best Costume Design. It was also nominated for the Golden Globe of Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Drama) for Ian McKellen, who failed to receive an Oscar nomination because of two votes. The film won the Silver Bear for director Richard Loncraine in the Berlin Film Festival. Richard III won the BAFTA of Best Production Design and Best Costume Design and was nominated for Best erformance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Ian McKellen), Best Adapted Screenplay and the Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film.
