Jazz is blessed with great iconic legacies. Any attempt at even a tentative listing would have to include, among others, the soaring trumpet of Louis Armstrong, the indigo moods of Duke Ellington, the bebop alto saxophone of Charlie Parker, the passionate searching of John Coltrane. And the irresistible swing of the Count Basie Orchestra.

The present version of the Count Basie Orchestra is a skilled interpreter of the enviable Basie legacy. This brand new recording is a superb example of the way this first rate assemblage of players — romping happily through Grammy®-nominated Dennis Wilsons atmospheric arrangements — is keeping the Basie sound alive, well into the 21st century. They are aided and abetted in the commission of great music by an impressive list of all-stars: singers Nnenna Freelon and Janis Siegel; young English singer/pianist Jamie Cullum; vocalese legend Jon Hendricks; pianists Hank Jones and Geri Allen; Basie veterans Frank Wess on flute, Butch Miles on drums, Curtis Fuller on trombone and Rufus Reid on bass
