Well, they weere partly important because they needed spartan women to breed spartan men. That gave them some importance...but I doubt the king of Sparta would ask his wife if he could kick the Persian into the Pit of Doom.
That is not really true... Women in Sparta enjoyed a great deal more power and respect than women in other classical city-states - probably because most of the men were usually doing something in the army.
Spartan women owned their own property, and managed all of the affairs of their family when the men were out fighting. It was far from equal, but it was better than most other places at the time.
