After many many requests I've made a short tutorial for TV Demons!
I used Adobe After Effects but I'm sure the same can be done on other programs.
Just leave a comment if you have any questions, or need further help or advice.
Also I'd love to see some video responses of your version.

I need to learn about alpha mattes and luma mattes - I'm not really sure what they are.
You should make more breakdown videos - I for one find them really interesting to watch.

@Kie77 Alpha mattes are for footage that already has an alpha channel,..Luma mattes creates transparancy from lightness of pixels...ie white being solid, black being transparant
