'Occupy Congress' heading for Washington

The Occupy movement is moving from Main Street to the halls of Congress.

Hundreds of protesters are expected to descend on Washington Tuesday for its "Occupy Congress" effort. But this time, they don't want to just rail against the system — they plan to work within it.
Occupiers are setting up meetings with lawmakers and their staff to push for their set of legislative priorities — the kind of lobbying typical of established causes and interest groups.

?"We're helping people from all over the country set up meetings with their representatives if they want to go that route," Caty McClure of Occupy D.C. told POLITICO.?

It's unclear how many meetings occupy protesters from across the country will be successful in setting up.

McClure declined to discuss which lawmakers occupiers would like to meet, or how many meetings they've set up.

Editor: Over a dozen activists from Occupy San Diego are going to Washington, DC, in response to a "call" to "Occupy DC" and Occupy Congress, which is to begin on January 17th, when Congress officially returns. About a dozen of these activists are traveling by Greyhound -- and this is the first of many reports by our special OB Rag reporter for the trip, Eugene Davidovich -- an OBcean. Other OSD folks are also heading to DC but later this month. Eugene will be sending us periodic reports on this historic 3000 mile journey and about what they find and do in the nation's capital.

The U.S. House of Representatives convenes for the first time in 2012 on January 17th. We can't wait until the weather gets nice and everybody has the day off. We need to be there en mass as soon as they begin their legislative session to let them know that they're not going to waste another year. Not much gets accomplished in an election year, and that is part of the problem. What better way to welcome them back than to have a huge demonstration that will drive the conversation on the ground and in the media. It's time we start holding their feet to the fire to get something done for the people. The event is still taking shape, but you are coming as individuals or groups of individuals to exercise your 1st Amendment right to peacefully petition your Government for a redress of grievances. Your grievances are many but the one common theme that runs through these varied grievances is that corporations, special interest and money from the elite produced a Government that is unable to govern. That's your unified message. This movement will be PURE grassroots. Occupy Your Congress, make contact and let them know we are against Indefinite Detention of US citizens, without a trial or charges. Yes, Obama signed NDAA! SOPA and PIPA internet CENSOR bills. We MUST have a FREE Internet. They said they would protect our rights, not take them away.
