0:04 And this is the key to why Jumong, founder of Koguryeo, was titled Dongmyong and worshiped as Dongmyong.

0:19 Kilim city (吉林), now occupyed by China, is the first capital city of Buyeo. And right behind Buyeo imperial city there Yongdam mountain fortress of Koguryeo is seen. Why is the Koguryeo ofrtress in the Buyeo's main territory?

0:30 Now, the Yongdam mountain fortress of Koguryeo is open to the public as the biggest city park in Kilim city.

Distinctive Koguryeo building structure still remains.

Inside the mountain fortress, treaces of lives of Koguryeo troops.

This stony pond, because it has no water, is called 'Dry pond'. It is considered to be storage to store war supplies during the Koguryeo era.

This huge reservoir called Yongdam(Dragon) is a facility to keep drinking water for Koguryeo troops and horses, huge size of which show that the Yongdan mountain fortress was very important military installation.

2:07 Then why did Koguryeo built this important fortress inside the territory of Buyeo?

The Koguryeo's Yongdam mountain fortress was built as a forward military base, after Koguryeo annexing Buyeo, for territorial expansion northwards (in 410).

Yongdam mountain fortress of Koguryeo, from which Buyeo imperial site, Dongdan mountain was clearly visible, meant the fall of 700 year old Buyeo.

Koguryeo annexed Buyeo, ruling this are from early 4C.

Powerful Bueyo, once ruled notheast Asia, started declining from late 3C with frequent attacks of northern nomadic people.

3:34 Losing war against Koguryeo, Buyeo destroyed in 494. However, already in 4C, Buyeo had surrenedered to Koguryeo's attack and had seemed to be annexed into Koguryeo.

3:56 Kwanggaeto stone monument, Jiban city, Chinese occupied land.

On the inscription of Kwanggaeto stone monument built in 414 by emperor Jangsu, son of Kwanggaeto, we can find clue to the mystery of two Dongmyongs. The Koguryeo foundation myth appeared on the inscription for the first time and according to the first record about Koguryeo foundation myth on it, Koguryeo seemed to borrow the Buyeo foundation myth around this time.

4:26 At late 4C, Buyeo got annexed into Koguryeo. Koguryeo kept Buyeo barely alive but practically Buyeo was ruled by Koguryeo even from before it totally destroyed by Koguryeo.
Koguryeo borrowed to facilitate annexation of the Buyeo people into its own people.

5:02 It is recorded that Koguryeo borrowed after annexing Buyeo in a Korean history book written by a scholar of Realist School in late Joseon.

At that time of Joseon, scholars of Realist School strongly criticized the record of Samguksagi (History of Three dynasties of Korea), which sayst Koguryeo's Jumong was Dongmyong.

Jung Yakyong (1762-1836) writes in his book, Abanggangyuko, "As Buyeo destroyed Koguryeo copied Buyeo foundation my and even stealed the title Dongmyong, which were considered extremely holy and auspicious ; Recording Jumong as Dongmyong is badly wrong."
