Well, I am not being cynical or anything, but if there is a God, who at some time was willing to sacrifice for people (or sacrifice his son for people's good - depends on the branch of your religion (if you're a Christian)), why would he care about his pride and someone laughing at him? He should care not about the way people treat him, but about the way people treat each other, in other words - god should care about a person being good toward other people, not toward him.

atAlanta, please, if you don't mind :) as in the Ancient Greek warrior, not the city.
And yes, I agree, many people do turn to what you dub "foxhole theology." I'd say that these are one of the two parties which Regina is condemning in this song. What bothers me is when believers universalize the trend to all atheists/nonbelievers and use it to assert their own superiority by accusing the latter party of hypocrisy. It doesn't seem that you're one of those people, though.

What I hear when I listen to this song is the stressing of human hypocrisy. People laugh at the idea of God and take his existence lightly. However, when times get tough and they lose hope, they expect God to help them out and spare them their hardships. But if there is a God, why would he want to help out those who laugh at him (figuratively) behind his back?
