Press Conference by the Raise the Minimum Wage Coalition. Rev. Jason Coulter discusses how scripture calls us to honor and respect and pay workers justly. He also says that while we can look to scripture, we don't need to do so in order to understand the right thing to do--which is to raise the minimum wage in teh state of Illinois.
He's wrong. Raising the minimum wage will not give poor workers a higher standard of living because when you raise the minimum wage, that means employers can't hire as many workers. Thus, unemployment is increased and employers will ONLY hire the workers whose skills satisfy the ever higher minimum wage. Generally, these higher skilled workers are NOT the poor working people he claims to be speaking for- they are the more experienced, and generally more wealthy ones that it helps.
