05/05/2009 In an interview with the ThinkProgress Wonk Room, Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL) defends the GOP misuse of a 2007 MIT study of the economics cap-and-trade legislation to claim cap and trade would be a $3100 "lightswitch tax," even though economist John Reilly, the author of the study, said their analysis was "just wrong" and "misrepresented" his work. Shimkus further says that he's "glad" the author objected, because now Shimkus will use a $3900 figure constructed by the Weekly Standard in response.
Shimkus is resorting to the energy tax lie because a cap on global warming pollution will allow America to rebuild its economy without being dependent on fossil fuel pollution -- benefiting everyone except the corporate polluters and the politicians who take their money.
