These rifles should be produced again and sold to public, they would be good home defense weapons. It is really amazing that in the times of Lewis and Clark and Napoleon´s wars there was an airgun better than many modern airguns and even better than firearms of those times.

Such an amazing piece of history, and that someone designed and constructed it without modern-day machining tools.

Im not so sure that air reservoir is cast iron. Considering that all other remaining rifles use formed sheet metal (riveted) and that is how it was designed. How exactly would you cast a hollow cone? What would you form it around and how would you remove it when it has been cast? Hollow wooden forms would be time consuming and costly. Also 40 shots before noticeable air drop-off sounds a bit generous.. I believe these were more likely rated for about 25-30 usable shots...

OKAY. I bite. HOW did we get to the Civil War with this outdated frontal assault with single shot musket arms when the technology for this air rifle was known. It does not make any sense. Even the Yankees in this battle had access to the Spencer repeating rifle which the Rebels said "you could load on Sunday and fire all week". Surely some brilliant southern gentlemen could have found a way to incorporate this weapon (the air rifle) into the order of battle.

    Darrow...for the Prosecution

There was no pumping between shots. It functioned more like a CO2 air handgun than modern air rifle.
