Aaron Palmer '03 is a proud member of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division (the "Screaming Eagles"). He was wounded by enemy sniper fire while serving in Afghanistan in October 2010 and was presented with the Purple Heart upon his return home. On May 19, 2011, Aaron returned to Eye Street to share his story with students in Mr. Mike Lipari's "20th Century War and Politics" class.

The Purple Heart is a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the President to those who have been wounded or killed while serving on or after April 5, 1917 with the U.S. military. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is located in New Windsor, New York. The Purple Heart Medal was established on February 22, 1932 as a revival of the Badge of Military Merit originally created by Gen. George Washington in 1782. It is the oldest award that is still given to members of the U.S. military.
