FBI: Man Arrested Trying To Bomb Dallas Building

The FBI says agents arrested Smadi after he placed what he thought was a bomb at the base of Fountain Place, a 60-story skyscraper located at 1445 Ross Avenue in downtown Dallas.
The FBI says undercover agents found out about Smadi's intent to commit violent attacks in Dallas. The FBI says agents tried to get him to change his mind about committing the attacks, but were unsuccessful. Undercover agents met with Smadi several times, they say, posing as a sleeper Al Qaeda cell. During one of those meetings, agents say Smadi decided to place a car bomb at the base of Fountain Place.
The FBI says it "ensured the (car bomb) contained only an inert/inactive explosive device which contained no explosive materials."
Agents say they arrested Smadi Thursday afternoon after he placed the dummy car bomb next to the building. The FBI says the public was never in any danger.
Agents also say Smadi was not connected to any terror organization, including the groups and individuals currently being investigated in Colorado, New York and Illinois.
The affidavit quotes Smadi as saying he wanted to be a "soldier" for Islam and for "Sheik Usama," who the FBI says is Osama bin Laden.
"I truly say that my dream is to be among God's soldiers, first for the support of Islam and my beloved Sheik Usama, may God give him long life. I don't know what is in me, but I love him as I love my father."
He will make his first appearance before a federal judge on Friday.
Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert released a statement Thursday evening confirming they were aware of the situation. "This is a troubling sign of the world we all live in today and we are extremely grateful for the vigilance of the FBI."
