In 2006, the Boston Symphony Orchestra programmed three performances of the rarely-performed Schoenberg masterpiece Gurrelieder. This footage was taken after Part I, as the three illustrious soloists take their bows: Johan Botha, Karita Mattila, and Lorraine Hunt Lieberson.

I was there as well. It was an amazing evening, made even more so by Hunt Lieberson's singing of the Wood Dove. It broke every heart in the audience. Friends of mine hearing her live for the first time turned to me and said "Now we understand the fuss made over her . . . she goes right to your soul." She forever will.

I was there to see her very last performance. She was a gorgeous woman inside and out.

Thank you so much for posting this clip! These performances were Lorraine's last ones at Symphony Hall. Boston was her home for many years and the place where she began singing profesionally. Her death on July 3, 2006 was a devastating loss to the world of music, and a shock to those of us who knew her personally. This video captures a poignant, heartbreaking moment. Thank you!

Lorraine Hunt Lieberson - RIP. Did you know that she died the day before Indepedence Day? Terrible, isn't it?
