This is the design proposal for a rainwater catchment system for the Sugar Shack, an urban intentional community in Los Angeles. The system depicted here will catch 220 gallons off the roof of the house, which we will then use to supplement city water for garden irrigation, fire suppression, or as an emergency supply during disaster conditions. Similar setups will be used on the roof and in the side yards, for a potential catch of up to 600 gallons.
Widespread, home and neighborhood scale adoption of rainwater catchment in LA would save residents hundreds of dollars a year, reduce pressure on the Colorado River and other imported water sources, reduce pressure on the sewage and flood control systems in the city, soften the ecological and lifestyle impacts of long dry periods, lay the foundation for urban food forestry, and help clear the way for rewilding of local habitats like the LA River for the enjoyment of all.
