My Pontiac G6 has a steering problem. After some online research, I found I'm not the only one.
I took my car to the dealership from which I originally purchased the vehicle. The problem was with the Electric Power Steering Motor (EPS Motor). They said they have had minimal report of this situation, however, it is very popular throughout the G6 community. The 2008 model in particular. GM has not issued an official recall but will support any repairs made under warranty. My hope in posting this video is that if enough word gets out, maybe they will issue recall instead of those outside of their warranty being stuck with a $600+ bill.

  • I feel like I'm watching my car...Just got mine fixed. Had to replace the steering column assembly, power steering motor/module, recalibrated the steering position sensor and tuned my steering. I only have 30k on my car. Thank goodness it's still under warranty. I already had to replace my power steering assist motor last year. Starting to get pretty nervous about these issues and if they're going to haunt me till I get rid of this car...

Since I took care of the problem, I have had no other issues whatsoever. I have 44K miles on my G6 and it still runs like a dream. Besides this little hiccup, it's been a great car. Hopefully you won't see any return issues!!

  • My Pontiac g6 sedan 2008 have the same problem! It all started last week. So far it doesn't affect driving too much. But it makes me worried. I let the walks service center to take a look but they couldn't figure out and thus assured me it's not a problem if it will not get worse. What can I do? I purchased this as a used vehicle from blue knob in 2009.

Do you have the 100k / 4 year warranty? Otherwise, I would go back to your dealership, or any GM dealer, and have them fix it. Eventually, it started messing with my steering. Nothing major, but enough to notice. It was the Electric Power Steering Motor, or EPS. A pretty pricey fix, but worth looking into. By no means would I consider your car a lemon, however, I would definitely look into a warranty situation.

Thanks for replying. I forgot to update. In fact, soon after my last post, I gave Pontiac costumer service a call. The representative there is very helpful. I was then referred to a local Stock Chevrolet dealer. And they help me replace the EPS module at no cost cause it's all covered by a inside policy. Since then, it's running great for more than 2 months now. So, yes, anyone has this same EPS problem should definitely give them a call.

I'm glad to hear they fixed it. I know that this has become a more well known problem, hopefully they will continue to work with their consumers!

  • I have a G6 GTP 2006 with approximately 45 miles. I have similar shaking at low speed, although mine is less pronounced although I can only assume that it will get worst. I also have the infamous clunking sound as well as a weird indescribable noise when turning the wheels.

Just paid 800$ to have the ball joints replaced. Of course that did nothing to this problem. I sounds like I'll need to replace the intermediate shaft and steering motor...

  • Hey I had this problem occur on my way home from work today. As the dealship was closed I called GM and reported the problem. Apparently this is the first time they have ever received a report on this issue, however it's a bunch of BS if you ask me. I urge people having issues to call and file a complaint. This is the only way recalls are issued and this seems like a major safety issue to me and from what google brings up this appears to be a wide spread problem.

  • @ e22smith: At the time that I had mine fixed, they had not issued a recall or a safety warning about the issue. However, my dealership contacted the manufacturer and sent them this video. The manufacturer stated that I was not the only person to complain or report this problem and that they were contemplating a safety recall. I'm not sure the status of this with their recent buy-out.

  • @ berner316: I owned my car for about six months before the problem surfaced, however, I bought it used with 11,000 miles. If the car already has 80,000 miles on it, I would assume that it would have already been fixed had it shown itself to the previous owner. HOWEVER, I am no mechanic. ;)

@CaliBaby1522: Mine was still under the bumper to bumper 4 year manufacturer warranty. It wasn't the alignment, it was the power steering motor failing that caused my steering wheel to shake.
