When I saw Joe Pass live, he was in his 80's at the time. Surely he was able to stand up if he wanted to. He sat down.... then asked the soundman to turn the volume down (opener was too loud for his taste).... and then he proceeded to completely blow me and most of the audience away.
After the gig I saw some dude outside whining: "how boring! why didn't he come in swinging from a cable like David Lee Roth in 'Panama'? i want a refund!"
@KillinDaWelfareMCs Personally I want to see a performance, not a recital. But You know what, it doesn't matter. This is what makes the entertainment industry what it is. Some people like this... others like that. Its whatever, Kevin is a great guy and a very great player. I would see him in a club like Ronnie Scotts, but in an arena or theater... its just not enough for me. Thats just me. You and everyone else has the right to their own opinion.
Hoopermazing - most of us can play without a pick, it's part of every pros' performance bag Banjo roles are expected and required when playing without a plectrum. . What impressed me was his speed, accuracy and endurance. Sometimes my fingers stiffen up and hurt when I finger pick too long.
And they were all great guitarist, just like Kevin. But that doesn't erase the fact that sitting on a stool for a 2 hour concert is boring as hell, it lacks entertainment value, there is no wow factor. If i'm paying $50 a ticket, at least stand up, if you can of course. Mike Stern, Al Di Meola, Alan Holdsworth all stand... Shall I go on, stupid?
@trwylekat - Wes Montgomery sat and played. Joe Pass sat and played. Django Reinhardt sat and played. Charlie Christian sat and played. Shall I go on, stupid?

@boertush
fair enough. this would have been early 80's when i caught him and he looked fairly tired by the end of the gig.

@JonP1961 That story is pretty impossible, Joe Pass died when he was 65
