Many of Americas top foreign policy scholars and pundits have predicted, even warned of Asias imminent rise as the leading economic power in the world. But writer Minxin Pei begs to differ. In the new issue of Foreign Policy magazine, he punctures the overheated rhetoric and offers a sharp reality check about Asia, where average incomes will still take 77 years to catch up with those in the United States and the continuation of fantastic rates of economic growth are not quite as guaranteed as many would lead you to believe.

Join Minxin Pei and New America Foundations Andrés Martinez for a spirited breakfast conversation on the potential of Asias Rise.

  • why is the rise of asia a threat? Asians are generally peaceful people. I think this will help to improve the worlds international defense, but will probably destroy the planet faster due to the pace and pollutants it takes to industrialize. Especially by a region with half the worlds population or more.

  • Minxin Pei has written the same article over and over again over the last 15 years.

his mind is still in old days

Ha, no way in hell. I'm going to work for the Government and what I wish to do is to make peace with all these 3 countries. I'm Chinese, and all these hatred should stop. If Japan, Korea and China unites together, Eastern influences will be dominant and Westerners are going to go down.

    World's international defence?

  • i can't believe minxin pei so anti china .. he forgot his race and where he come from.. even he's right before china fail he will fail first.

  • @speedoak What I find most dishonest about Minxin Pei is his lack of reflection. He's been wrong for 15 years but he still turns out the same articles predicting China's doom based on the news item of the day. He makes no attempt to understand why he was wrong in the past and how his new predictions are different from the old.

  • China/Korea/Japan will curse each other to the death..

But still those three countries will dominate eventually.

    Electronic-japan/korea

    Manufacturing/labor-China

WEsterners were major consumers and now they can't function

without asian product. China isn't begging to export, they use it to

threat western industry. These ppl are talking bs

Sometimes academia will do that to you. A person should get a "real" experience coupled with education to get a grasp of what is really going on in the world.

  • CCP is changing, it is becoming more and more skillful at the great power game of international politics. It's very adepted at dealing domestic political, economic issues. But Minxin is refusing to change his view on CCP.

  • I like Minxin
