When planters are set outside in the sun and wind, you may have to water them several times a day just to keep the plants alive. However, by using self-watering pots, you can grow lush, vibrant plants with a lot less watering. This segment shows step-by-step instructions on how to make your own self-watering pot. A BIG thanks from Houston, Texas. Much less expensive than buying the pots ready-made.

Do the cans rusting effect the plants at all?

Nicely done ~ The ones I am making out of 'single' cat litter buckets this year won't have any fill tube at all. Instead, the overflow hole will be 1" so I can simply fill there until water runs out. I was using a PVC fill tube but there is a lot of concern over the chemicals it may leach into the water.

Wow, this video is very well done, everything is very well explained. This is great because the pots used are decorative and the items used to make it self watering are recycled!! And its all so simple, no "special" tools required. I have some water tight pots and I am going to use this very method to convert them to self watering pots. Thanks for the great video.
