MALTA: Two historical chapels: San Pawl Milqi and Ħal Millieri

CHAPEL OF SAN PAWL MILQI

San Pawl Milqi means "St Paul Welcome" and it's believed that Paul preached from here when he was shipwrecked in 60 AD (See Acts 27 & 28).

This chapel is on the hillside near Burmarrad and is dedicated to St Paul. It's the site of a Roman agriculture estate discovered in 1960 and it dates from the 3rd to the 2nd Century BC. From materials collected it was learned that it used to be an olive oil industrial site.

The original 5th century chapel of St Paul Bindiqi was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt in 1616.

These chapels were built on the remains of what is believed to have been St Publius villa and in which St Paul was hosted in 60 AD.

Phoenicio-Punic period Tombs from 3rd Century BC were discovered on the site.

San Pawl Milqi is under the care of Heritage Malta and it's open to visitors by appointment only.

CHAPEL OF THE ANNUNCIATION AT ĦAL MILLIERI

The chapel of the Annunciation at Ħal Millieri is a unique historical monument from Maltas medieval past.

It dates to around 1450 and was built over the site of an earlier 13th century chapel, and a much older late-Roman rural complex. The chapel is also known for its unique set of frescoes on its interior walls.

This chapel is situated in the old village of Casal Millieri, which lies between Żurrieq, Qrendi, Mqabba and Kirkop. It is a typical example of a Maltese medieval church. It measures about 5m wide and 7m long and is divided into five bays by pointed arches arising from the wall piers. This village was first documented in 1419 and its origins date back to Roman and possibly pre-historic times.
-----------------------------------
Ħal Millieri Annunciation Chapel is looked after by "Din l-Art Ħelwa" and it's open to the public on the 1st Sunday of each month, 9am to 12 noon.
----------------------------------------
The music is from the album "Daqq Varjat Bil-Mandolina for Laurie Armato" by Manuel Casha, Melbourne, Australia.

Accordion: the late Laurie Bugeja - Mandolin: Laurie Armato - Guitar: Joe Gauci -
Lead Guitarist and producer: Manuel Casha to whom we extend our thanks for contributing the music.

  • hi there my friends

I used to visit this very historical place almost every day when I was a child and claimed it as my own.lol. Anyway I am so glad to see that it is now open to the public to visit and enjoy!! San Pawl Milqi holds a very special place in my heart and I thank you so much for sharing with us and bringing back such wonderful and treasured childhood memories. hugs x

  • @clarrisina Greetings from Malta. Thank you for the comment. Glad that you enjoyed this video and it brought you fond memories of childhood. Your "territory" is under the care of Heritage Malta. Those who wish to visit the chapel need to make an advance booking with Heritage Malta. Open-day for general public is held on special occasions. In Feb, there is a special mass to commemorate the arrival of St Paul (shipwrecked).

    Hugs,

    Jasmine

  • We have to keep in mind that in the past, most of us never owned a car and it was not easy to go around the islands so that can explain why you, Grazio, I and others, had never seen some remotely located chapels. Also, today, these historic places are being appreciated and advertised more than in the past.

Thanks and glad you found them interesting.

    Alfred

  • Hi Vince. Jasmine is dragging me to see these historic places and I'm glad she is because I had never heard about many of them either, but she loves all these tiny chapels spread around our islands.

    Glad you enjoyed them. Regards

    Alfred

  • Thanks John. Tiny Malta-Big History. Jasmine just asked me, what next? :)) There are a few more areas she'll be able to cover.

  • I've never been to many places before but Jasmine is a keen observer and wants to visit all historic place around Malta and Gozo.

She loves Malta's history. Glad you found out about 2 "new" places.

  • Very interesting, i got a lot to see when i come next year.

  • Choy Hong & Alfred: PROSIT for another astounding show. (I confess I had never seen those two fascinating chapels.) We should be proud of our little island at the crossroads of cultures across history.
