Child 44 is an interesting first novel. More than a suspenseful mystery story, it shines because of the piercing portrayal of 1950s Stalinist Russia where this story takes place.

  • @FTA4evr the real story about "Citizen X", together with an interest in the Stalinist era, inspired TR Smith to write Child 44.

I've only seen the "Gorky Park" movie. Ahh, Lee Marvin! He's sorely missed!

Jan De Hartog: I know the name, but didn't read any of his books.

Do check my other book reviews, I mention some special ones, interesting for avid readers looking for something fresh. Actually, I should make more of them!

  • I'm a fan of your knife reviews, but this is my first viewing of you review of books. I'm always looking for recommendations of authors I'm not familiar with. There's a movie, "Citizen X", about a notorious Russian serial killer.

Regarding crime novels set in Russia: Have you read any of Martin Cruz Smith's novels, the best known being "Gorky Park". Because you mentioned the Dutch version of Mr. T.R. Smith's books I wonder if you are familiar with the Dutch writer Jan De Hartog?
