RIP to the Spectrum....home to the Flyers (1967-1996), the 76ers (1967-1996), Wings (1987-1996), Phantoms (1996-2009), KiXX (1996-2009), Soul (2004-2008), countless legendary boxing matches, concerts, WWF wrestling matches, Ringling Bros. circuses (which I LOVED as a kid!), thousands of college basketball games including 3 regional finals (my dad was at Duke-Kentucky in '92 when Laettner hit 'The Shot' on the way to the repeat, quite possibly the best college basketball game ever), and 2 Final Fours (1976, 1981 both won by Bob Knight's Indiana Hoosiers), 2 NHL All-Star Games (1976, 1992), 2 NBA All-Star Games (1970, 1976), the 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1985, and 1987 Stanley Cup Finals (the Flyers won 1 Cup in '74 on Spectrum ice), the 1977, 1980, 1982, and 1983 NBA Finals (the Sixers lone title in the Spectrum era was won in LA in '83), Gene Hart and Dave Zinkoff, the iconic voices of the Flyers and 76ers, respectively, Kate Smith and her stirring renditions of 'God Bless America' before the Broad Street Bullies' biggest games, mainly in the Playoffs, often working as that good luck charm, the setting for Rocky's famous win over Apollo Creed in American film and Philly lore, the raucous, passionate, bloodthirsty crowds that always showed up for the best events in 'America's Showplace'...we will miss it!

  • Have no love for Philly at all, but the Spectrum shouldn't have been torn down. As is the norm in Philly, if you bring a sports team to the area, the fans usually sell it out. They could have brought another team in after the Phantoms left.

  • don't forget USHRA events from '88-'09. I went to 5 of them. '01, '02, '04, '05, and '06.

'85-'87 they were in The Vet, of all places, which was neat to hear about and see footage of.

  • Great Place! gona miss it. Saw a lot of great games and concerts there. Had great acoustics when compaired to other arenas.
