Florida Atlantic University was established in 1961 as Florida's fifth public university and welcomed its first class of 867 students in 1964. President Lyndon Johnson spoke at the dedication ceremony, calling for "a new revolution in education" that would offer opportunity to all Americans. More than 120,000 alumni and 50 years later, FAU's 29,000-plus students find educational and research opportunities at seven campuses and sites along 100 miles of South Florida's Atlantic Coast.
