A lot of little clips mushed together from the 26th Annual Tokai Area Iaido Seminar and rank test in Hamamatsu, Japan, Sep 7, 2008. The group doing kata with me (0:45) is the lowest rank that I have footage of (I was 3rd soon to be 4th) All the other clips are of 5th or 6th dan and above with ranks ascending from lower to highest at end. One of my sensei (8th dan Hanshi) is on the far end at around 4:30, as is another (7th dan Kyoshi & 2x All Japan Iaido tournament champion-2nd from left in same group) Soke's son is in the black hakama closest to the camera at 6:10. I can break out the program and try to supply more names upon request. For now I can tell the guy doing a frigg'n awesome shihogiri at 6:50 is a 9th dan, and both the gentlemen at 7:10 are 10th. Finally there is Ikeda soke at 7:40 and teaching at 8:10. I asked around at the dinner party afterwards and learned hes in his 80s. The man emits some powerful ki - video does not do him justice. Besides that its shaky amateur video thrown together on Mac iMovie. I'd get caught up watching only to notice the camera pointed at the floor more often than not, thus the short choppy clips - some with better sound and clearer than others because I slipped my little digital camera in my gi to try to get footage while up close listening to the seminar or watching the highest ranks do kata, thus poorer quality and less video of the higher ranks than that taken on the camcorder. The lineage from Shigenobu to present is added at the end out of happy gratitude to have tested under the 21st (Fukui Torao) and 22nd soke since beginning Iai some 10 years ago here. And finally my two favorite little samurai, happy dad move there what'dya gonna do...

  • Thanks for posting your iaido videos! It's nice to have more legitimate MJER ones on here.

I have been practicing at Esaka Sensei's dojo in Tokyo for the last couple of years. If you have a chance, I think you would be very welcome if you stop by next time you are in Tokyo!

  • You're very welcome and thanks back to you for the comment. I've read/heard nothing but the highest acclaim for Esaka Sensei, what a great experience it must be to practice at his dojo. If the opportunity arises I'd love to get in a practice session up there.

Or if ever down in Izu give a shout and I'll pass along directions to Nirayama dojo, my sensei and everyone down here is very welcoming to visiting iaidoka as well.

  • Hey caseysan. You did a great job when compiling this video. Love the beginning :o) So the person in black with the white sageao is Soke's son? His iai is very smooth. Also thank you for the footage of Soke. Kind regards. PS: Everything ok with the document I send to you?

  • Thanks and yeah either it's him or some impostor using the same last name. I'm absolutely certain all names, ranks and/or relationships stated above are unquestionably correct. Glad you like the video your iai doc looks great as well.

  • Great display of formal Iai. Love this video...

  • Hey just a delayed thanks for watching... (been busy entertaining a Japan visiting parental unit haven't been in here in a while) Anyhow favorable comments always welcome, thanks again.

  • You've done it well then, it shows.

  • I did train with Takeshima Soke...

  • :o) man, what an imposter lol

    Thx caseysan!

  • I know what you know regarding this matter. Why feel the desire to mention this on youtube? Denmark, hmmm... I think I know who you are :) Rgds

  • Wow, we are not there yet... Rgds

  • I do MJER in ZNIR and my point was that kfkonrad, who must have been practising quite close if not with Takeshima sensei from Shikoku (Correct me if wrong, please), who had a more practical approach to iaido, points this difference out in just one word.
