Four wild deer we know well recently had, between them, eight babies. Eva, in her new thin self, was eager to hang out with us, perhaps to show us the new fawns, but I think also to get away from them a little for some moments. Eva will come up on the balcony, stand with us as we all look out over the yard. The babies are sometimes sleeping, hidden nearby in the woods, but also often running around the yard, jumping from new experience to new experience. In this video you can hear a baby crying a few times - one of the few times we ever hear deer vocalize. In another scene a baby sniffs something in the air, and then sneezes - pretty cute. At the beginning of the video we mistakenly say that the babies are two hours old. They were actually about 2 or 3 days old - still very new to the world!

For those keeping score at home, Mary had 1 baby, Eva had 2 babies, Rosie had 3 babies, and Shanti had 2 babies. Mary is Eva's cousin. Rosie is Eva's sister, and Shanti is Eva's daughter. Rosie's young daughter Susi makes a cameo appearance to check out Aunt Eva's babies.

  • How can you tell which one's which?

  • @Piano99Man

How can you tell which one's which? We see them repeatedly day after day. In time we began to recognize differences in behavior, slightly different body and head shapes, and slightly different coloring. Also, some deer, like people, are unusually clean, and well kept, usually more successful in finding food, while others seem, well, less "together." All the deer are clearly individuals, easily as intelligent as dogs, with similar differences in individual behavior.

  • Can you own deer in your farm? is not ilegal cuz those animals are wild ones, not domestic?

  • Please visit our Deer in the Yard web pages - the link is in this video's "more info." We don't own a farm. WE moved onto the DEER's land. The deer befriended us. They come and go as they please.

  • how did you get the deer to let you pet them?

  • They actually got us to adapt to their desires. See the video's "more info" for the link to our Deer in the Yard web pages for the whole story.
