Shake it and Break it - Ray Kaart in 1977

From the highlight days from Ray Kaart who died yesterday (2011.01.13) on his 77th birthday in Haarlem.

Dutch Swing College

In a TV program from the Netherlands in 1977 called "Music Gallery" modern jazz pianist and TV host Pim Jacobs introduces Peter Schilperoort's Dutch Swing College Band. I have a lot of Dutch people worl-wide watching my jazz youtube site. Therefore I left the short Dutch intoduction in. Pim basically said: This band actually doesn't need an introduction because it is so well known and is considered one of the best in Europe, if not the best.

People who have seen films of this band, might be unfamiliar with Ray Kaart, the trumpet player, the brother of Dick Kaart, the trombonist.

I believe Ray always wanted te become the trumpet man of this band, but Peter found him not disciplined enough. For several periods Ray was in the band, however Ray was a bit of an individual; he would play bebop notes in an ensemble, etc. Personally, I always found find him a man with very interesting ideas.

  • I'm a big of the DSCB, so this is not good news to me. Anyway, Ray still lives every time we hear his recordings!
