Armenian Journalist Hrant Dink Killed and Assain Arrested

Journalist Hrant Dink, one of the most prominent voices of Turkiye's Armenian community, was killed by a gunman at the entrance to his newspaper's offices.

Dink, 53, was a Turkish citizen of Armenian descent, living in Istanbul, Turkiye.


His daughter and wife have been taken to the hospital after they have collapsed when they have heard the news.

Workers at the newspaper, including Dink's brother could be seen weeping and being consoled by others near his fallen body.

In the past Dink had received threats from unknown sources.

Dink was a public figure in Turkiye, and the editor of the bilingual Turkish-Armenian newspaper Agos.

His killing has been met with protests from all over the country, including Prime Minister Erdogan.

He told the reporters that they will use every available resource to catch the killer.
He also commented on the murder and said that, his killing interestingly coincided at a time when some countries were about to bring the alleged Armenian Genocide to discussions.

Police said they were searching for the suspected murderer, believed to be a teenager wearing a white hat and a denim jacket, but the identity and motivation of the gunman was as yet unknown.

According to Turkish press, Ogun Samast, aged 17, believed to be the assassin of Hrant Dink , was arrested in Samsun, Turkiye 32 hours after the assassination.

Dink, editor of the bilingual Turkish-Armenian paper Agos, was one of the most influential members of Turkey's Armenian community.


Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan went on television at least three times to speak about the killing.

On Friday, Patriarch of Turkish Armenians Misrob Mutafyan announced 15 days of mourning.

Meanwhile , EU Foreign Policy chief Javier Solana said that the murder of a journalist in Turkey on Friday would not affect Turkey's prospects of joining the European Union.

Solana said, before a meeting in Ramallah with the head of the Fatah faction in the Palestinian parliament, Azzam al-Ahmed.
