Серіал заснований на циклі книг The Railway Series («Залізничні історії») письменника Вілберта Одрі (W.V.Awdry), що розповідають про пригоди наділених людськими якостями паровозиків, вагончиків і автомобілів, які живуть на вигаданому Острові Содор (Island of Sodor).
