As our day in Kyoto was winding up we made a late afternoon visit to Kiyomizu temple which is one of the most famous and best photographed temples in Japan.

  • What are thery eating at 0:36? Looks yummy!

  • Hello TheErrantWilder, These delicious buns are called 'nikuman' in Japanese. The buns include some special filling such as meat or other items and they are a wintertime treat here in Japan. These nikuman were indeed very delicious! -Kurt :-)

  • There's a very famous and old Japanese saying which goes "清水の舞台から飛び降りる" (translation: to jump off of the balcony of Kiyomizu temple) that virtually every Japanese person knows.

Do YOU know what it means? (Does anyone else?)

Since you're always giving us little quizzes, here's mine for you! (If you don't know the answer, you're allowed to ask your wife or your father-in-law. They should be able to tell you.)

  • Hello TiramisuHappy, I'm sorry for my delay in response while I was away in hospital this past week (I'm better now and happy to be home!). Yumiko told me about this saying while we were standing on the balcony. She said that it refers to someone about to take on a task/project/goal with great energy and enthusiasm and how such an effort is similar to jumping off this balcony which slants downward. I may have forgotten exactly what she said though this seems to be what comes to mind. -Kurt :-)

  • Did you take a taxi all the way to the top entrance? My legs were killing me after walking up the street from the bus stop. It's even more spectacular at night when the buildings are lit up.

  • Hello anwahi, We actually wound up walking up (and down) that long street several times during the course of the day. We were certainly worn out by the time we began our drive home. Thanks for watching and commenting! -Kurt :-)

  • Hey Kurt! How's it going these days? How funny that I've just now stumbled across this series because I have been going through and editing my old footage of Kyoto from last october. Gearing up for this years trip as well!!!

    Cant wait!!!

    Cheers!!!

    Ted.

  • @TiramisuHappy Hey while I was there my friend Yuka told me that it means that you'll be considered brave and courageous as you take on the trials of life. Hope this answers your question. :D

  • I love Kiyomizudera! I was there in '05 and I'm hoping to visit again this year. Definitely one of my favorites, possibly my absolute favorite of the temples I saw in Kyoto. It's really interesting watching you film all the same shots I took. There were a few where you were standing in EXACTLY the same spot I was. I don't know why anyone would want to skip all the way to the top entrance when the way up is so beautiful.

  • Hello gtpluvr, I'm glad that this video could bring back some nice memories. We really had a nice time and I'm glad you could share our outing via YouTube. -Kurt :-)

  • Me and my husband walk and eat all the way up to the temple!
